Hair System FAQs

If you are one of the millions of people enduring hair loss, you’ve probably looked into all of forms of hair restoration including hair transplants, hair plugs, FUE (follicular unit extraction) hair plugs, PRP (platelet-rish-plasma) and or considered hair loss supplements such as finasteride, propecia or minoxidil. IF, this sounds like you, read our list of most frequently asked questions.

How much does it cost? $1195 for the initial hair system, installation, haircut and the first reapplication. The systems that I use last between two (2) and six (6) months, sometimes more, and that is when you will need a new system. A new system is $645, reapplication appts range from $110 to $165 depending on how often you come in. Reapplication times vary based on usage and upkeep but most systems need to be reapplied every two (2) to four (4) weeks.

What is the maintenance like?  Reapplication times vary depending on method of application and are unique to the person. We will have to remove, clean and reapply your system anywhere from seven (7) days to four (4) weeks. I do my best to figure out what method gives my clients a minimum of three (3) weeks, which seems to be the average. Your experience varies based on your lifestyle and budget. E.g. Some people might be able to get 3-4 weeks out of tape while others only get 1-2 weeks using glue.

How much will it cost me to maintain? In the spirit of transparency, some clients only get 2-3 months and others can get 6-8 months out of the same exact system. So, when I say the lifespan of your hair system varies for each individual, I full heartedly mean that.  I am going to give you 3 different scenarios to help decide if this is for you or not.

Client 1 might be able to do his own maintenance at home, and only needs 2 systems per year, so they're only spending $2,005/yr or $5.49/day.

Client 2 might need 4 systems per year, and comes to see me once a month for maintenance, reapplication and haircut, costing them $6,025 a year or $16.50 a day.

Client 3 might have to get 6 systems per year, and comes to see me every 2 weeks for maintenance, reapplication and haircut, costing them $10,165 a year or $27.84 a day. Again, everyones hair system experience is different and these numbers are assuming no discounts have been applied (model pricing) and these are rough estimates to give you some idea of the total cost!

How often do you have to maintain/fix it?  With the liquid adhesive I use, I recommend reapplication every 2-3 weeks. While the tape needs to be adjusted every 1-2 weeks.

How long does a standard system last?  The systems I use, last between three (3) to six (6) months. Once again, this has to do with your lifestyle and how well you care for your system. If you’re a very active outdoorsy person or work out a lot, you can expect a shorter lifespan of your hair system.

Why should I choose this over the surgery? This is completely up to you. This is instant, guaranteed results, no down time, no pain, no large up front investment. I get a ton of clients who have tried all types of other solutions such as, surgery, hair fiber, propecia, finasteride, led helmets, smp, and they all have said, "they wish they knew about this option sooner". Think about your life and life style, can you afford this? Can you maintain this? Are you willing to accept its hair glued or taped onto your scalp?

How long does it take to get the hair? After your consultation, if I do not have a unit in stock for you, normally I can get one within days of ordering. However, if you prefer lace and have a super common hair color these can take a few or several weeks to come in.

What is the most natural looking hairline? The thin skin units in my opinion offer the most natural and undetectable hairlines. However, these units typically do not last more than one (1) to two (2) months, so be aware before choosing these units that we will need to replace them often. I will also focus on helping you to learn how to style the hair properly, you will be able to hide the hairline with the hair itself, helping you feel more at ease while wearing your system

What base is better for me? Lace systems are more breathable which would be better for athletic, outdoorsy or high perspiration or oily skinned clients. Only tape adhesive will be used on the lace systems. Liquid adhesive and skin systems would be ideal for the less oily skinned clients and more of a general use system. Hair styles are also part of the consideration when choosing the system. If you have an exposed hairline hair style you would want to choose the skin system over the lace to produce a more natural hairline. I will help you decide during our consultation and we may switch back and forth with things such as weather changes in STL.

What bonding method should I choose? What method I recommend is based on your life style and scalp health. If you are an avid sweater, or have an oily scalp I likely will recommend a silicone or acrylic based tape or glue. The tape I use are hypo allergenic. Water based liquid adhesives are great and can provide great hold times with easy clean up for those who are not sweating as often and have a scalp that is not oily. However, just like base types, each persons preference varies widely and I find that a lot of my clients experiment to find the best fit for them!

Bonding Method Pros & Cons:  Tape can be more resistant to water, humidity and scalp oils. Sometimes, if you wear the tape for an extended period of time the breakdown and residue can be hard to clean. Based on client feedback, glue has the most natural feel, can be easier to clean, and in some cases lasts longer.

Is it itchy? It can be from time to time, depending on the application method. When the hair underneath starts growing back sometimes this can cause itchiness, but nothing unbearable.

Can I shower/Swim?  Yes! Please be aware and be cautious and make sure to shower after any type of swimming to keep the hair clean and healthy.

What kind of style can I do? Your options are really limitless, however some styles will look and work better than others and require less maintenance. Most of my systems come with a very natural, slight, wave. If you wanted a system that was very curly, I would need to know at least 2 weeks in advance in order to accommodate due to the special ordering process. We can discuss this during your consult together.

Will the liquid adhesive clog my scalp and break me out? No, the liquid adhesives are formulated to not block your follicles or clog your pores. You will continue to grow hair underneath the system without any change to the amount of hair or speed that it grows.

Is it human hair? Yes. Each hair system is human hair and is made by hand. It may have synthetic fibers added throughout if there is a high percentage of grey.  In some cases the hair may be combined with yak hair which is very human like.

Will people see my hair system?  When applied and maintained correctly, your system will be pretty undetectable. How you style and wear your system also impacts the visibility. Some exposed hairlines will be noticeable to you, but most likely not to others. If you are hiding your hairline there is absolutely no way to tell. Sometimes we are our own worst critic, wear it with confidence, and no one will be paying attention to it. I also say sometimes embracing a messy look works well to deceive others, a lot of times people who have their hair perfect draw more attention.

If you are interested in moving forward, please contact the salon (314)721-5465 or email Main@KinkHair.com to schedule a consultation. I look forward to our journey!
